Entrance Examination for international Students (Outline)
Undergraduate Admission
Application Requirements
Applicants who is not Japanese citizens and who meet any of the following (1) through (6) and all of (7) through (8). If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact the university’s admissions office before applying.
- A person who has have completed 12 years of school education in his/her country (including a person who is expected to complete the course by March 31, 2025) and have a university entrance qualification from your country.
- If the period of school education is less than 12 years, a person has also completed a preparatory course or a course at a training institute designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. (Including a person who is expected to complete the course by March 31, 2025). *If the applicant has graduated from a school in mainland China. The university does not include secondary vocational schools, vocational secondary schools, technical schools, adult secondary schools, adult secondary vocational schools and secondary self-study examinations in the 12-year course.
- A person who has passed an academic achievement test equivalent to completion of a 12-year course in his/her country.
- A person who has completed a course of study at a school equivalent to a senior high school in his/her country that meets the requirements, such as being deemed to have completed a course of study of 11 years or more, as determined by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
- A person holding an International Baccalaureate Diploma awarded by the International Baccalaureate Office, a foundation under the Swiss Civil Code.
- A holder of an Abitur qualification is recognized as a university entrance qualification in the Länder of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- A holder of a baccalaureate is recognized as a university entrance qualification in the French Republic.
- A person who has entered Japan for the purpose of pursuing higher education and has a residence status that does not prevent admission to higher education under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
- A person who has passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N1 or N2) administered by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services Foundation (JEESF), scored approximately 200 points (excluding writing) on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), scored at least level C or above on the J. TEST Practical Japanese Proficiency Test administered by the Association for Testing Japanese Language (ATS), or level 2 or above in the ‘Japanese NAT-TEST’ administered by the Publishers of Professional Education.

If you apply from your home country for a new visa status, then you must obtain your new visa status as soon as possible after enrolling in the S or A schedule. Applicants in the B schedule will not be in time to apply for the April admission. Please take caution.
* The examination on November 16th will be held here at IOT, and also in Miyagi, Niigata, Nagano, Shizuoka, Osaka and Fukuoka. Access map to the regional entrance examination venues:

Graduate Admission
Application Requirement
A person who satisfies any one of the below conditions of (1)-(6), and has permission to apply to IOT resulting from the Prior Consultation.
- A person who graduated from a university in accordance with Article 52 of the School Education Law, or is expected to graduate by March of 2021.
- A person who was awarded a bachelor’s degree, or expected to be awarded by March of 2021, as regulated by Article 68.2.3 of the School Education Law (National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation).
- A person who finished a sixteen-year curriculum in a school of a foreign country, or is expected to finish by March of 2021.
- A person in Japan who finished a sixteen-year curriculum of distance learning in a foreign country, or is expected to finish by March of 2021.
- A person designated by a Minster from MEXT (under the Public Notice of the Ministry of Education, No. 5 in 1953).
- A person recognized for IOT’s Graduate School acquired excellent grades for prescribed credits; either enrolled at a university for over three years, or completed a fifteen-year curriculum in a school of a foreign country.

If you apply for a new visa status from your home country, please proceed to obtain the new visa as soon as possible after the entry procedure for schedule A, B, and C. For the D schedule, applications will not be in time for the April admission. Please take caution.

At IOT’s Graduate School, our students select the project theme for their master’s degree, so applicants (using IOT’s forms) should submit a written explanation regarding the reasons and ambitions for their master’s project in advance. Applicants should consult with IOT’s faculty to smoothly facilitate research guidance after admission.
