左官研究
Plastering Studies
私はこれまで、設計者、施工者として多くの建築に関わる中で、左官という技術に触れてきた。土壁、漆喰、大津磨き。そこには、現代の建築で一般的に用いられている工業製品とは異なる世界がある。 同じ土を使っても、産地によって性質は異なる。そこに混ぜる砂や藁の量、材料を寝かせる期間、下地のつくり方、塗り重ねる厚さ、乾燥の状態によって、完成する壁は変わっていく。
そして、その材料の性質を見極め、鏝を使って一枚の壁をつくり上げるのが左官職人である。私は、この左官という技術を、単なる伝統技術として保存するだけではなく現代の建築の中でどのように生かしていくことができるのかを考えている。

Throughout my career as an architect and contractor involved in numerous architectural projects, I have had the opportunity to engage with the craft of plastering. Earthen walls, lime plaster, and Otsu-style polished plaster—these represent a world distinct from the industrial products commonly used in modern architecture. Even when using the same type of earth, its properties vary depending on the region of origin. The finished wall changes depending on the amount of sand or straw mixed in, the curing period of the materials, the preparation of the substrate, the thickness of each layer applied, and the drying conditions.
It is the plasterer who assesses the properties of these materials and uses a trowel to craft a single wall. I am considering not only how to preserve this craft of plastering as a traditional technique, but also how to incorporate it into contemporary architecture.
