Architecture Regeneration Studies

Restoring old traditional houses offers a completely different kind of appeal than building new ones.

Standing before a structure built decades—or sometimes over 100 years—ago, the first step is to figure out how to restore it.

The most challenging aspect of building restoration is, without a doubt, structural reinforcement.

How do you ensure the safety required for a modern building while preserving the old pillars and beams? Things that would be simple if you were to demolish the building and start from scratch become much more complicated when you have to work with what’s already there.

Restoring a building also means encountering the work left behind by the craftsmen of the past.

We aim to preserve the original form of the building as much as possible.

However, this does not mean we should change nothing.

Damaged structures must be reinforced, and we must also add the features necessary for people to live there today.

In “The Theory of Architectural Revitalization,” we survey actual traditional houses and examine how they were constructed.

We examine the structure.

We examine the materials.

We examine the craftsmen’s techniques.

And we consider what should be preserved and what should be changed so that these buildings can continue to be used in the future.

There, the traditional techniques we have studied—including those related to forests, timber, and plastering—are preserved in the form of actual architecture.

And rather than simply preserving the old as it is, we incorporate modern technology and new ideas to transform these structures into buildings that people can use once again.
